Abstract

Abstract. High enough internet usage causes students in Bandung to have problematic internet use. The problematic use of the internet makes students experience negative impacts such as lack of social communication, anxiety, and stress which causes low subjective well-being because most students use the internet outside of lecture activities. The purpose of this study was to obtain empirical evidence related to the relationship between problematic internet use and subjective well-being in students in the city of Bandung. The research design used was correlational with the convenience sampling method with the number of subjects 250 students in the city of Bandung. The analytical technique used is the Spearman Correlation Test. The measuring instrument used to measure problematic internet use is the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2) made by Caplan (2010) and adapted by Nafisah and Halimah (2018). Meanwhile, to measure Subjective Wellbeing using the SWLS measuring instrument made by Diener, Emmons, Larsen & Griffin (1985) which has been adapted by Hanif Akhtar and the SPAN measuring instrument compiled by Ed Diener (2009) which was adapted by Yusak Novanto. The results showed that there was a significant negative relationship between problematic internet use and subjective well-being in students in the city of Bandung. Correlation analysis shows the coefficient value of r = -0.595 with p = 0.000 (p <0.05). This means that the higher the use of problematic internet, the lower the subjective welfare of students in the city of Bandung.
