Abstract

ABSTRACT: Dunaliella salina is a green microalga that lives in seawater and is known as a natural source of β-carotene. Culture media is an important  in the production of D. salina biomass. One of them is salinity which influences the production of β-carotene. This study aims to determine the effect of salinity modification on the production of β-carotene content and the anticancer activity of Dunaliella salina. This research is in the form of a systematic literature review, by conducting a literature search through several publishers, namely Google Scholar, Pubmed, Taylor & Francis, Research Gate and Springer and then selecting articles that match the inclusion criteria, a total of 5 articles obtained at the main library then analyzed the data. The results showed that there was a significant effect of salt concentration in culture media on increasing Dunaliella salina β-carotene production, in hypertonic media cells would experience osmotic pressure and encourage cells to produce β-carotene as a form of self-defense. However, because of the increase in salt can reduce cell growth. With the increased production of β-carotene content, it also increases the antioxidant and anticancer activity of Dunaliella salina.

Keywords: Dunaliella salina, salinity, β-carotene, anticancer.
