Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to examine the contribution of the effect of interaction with friends to the subjective well-being in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic by looking at the perception and satisfaction of friendships. The data was collected using using a google form with a convenient sampling technique. The participants in this study were children and adolescents (N = 3,115; 53.4% female and 45.75% male) aged 10-18 years in Indonesian.  Friendship perceptions and satisfaction were measured using a measuring instrument from Children's Worlds. Subjective well-being was measured using the Children's Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale.  Linear regression analysis was used to examine the contribution of interactions with friends towards SWB. Descriptive analysis was conducted by presenting mean scores that based on gender and age group. Perception of having enough friends (β = .134; p < 0.1) had a significant positive contribution (p = .000) and friendship satisfaction had a positive contribution (β = .550; p < 0.1) which was 41.8% significant on subjective well-being. Children and adolescents showed a mean SWB score (M = 69.76; SD = 24.16) which is lower than the normal mean SWB score that based on the criteria of the homeostasis theory from Cummins and the results of research conducted by Rees before the COVID-19 pandemic period. It needs to be a special attention for parents to provide opportunities to interact with friends for children and adolescents during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Subjective well-being diukur dengan menggunakan Children’s Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale.
