Abstract

Abstract. Instagram user are increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is dominated by emerging adulthood aged between 18 to 24 years old. While using Instagram, emerging adulthood shows signs of social media addiction by fulfilling 5 of the 9 criteria according to Lemmens's Social Media Addiction Criteria (2016). Emerging adulthood should already have high self-regulation, so there should be no indication of addictive behaviour in them. Self-regulation is one of the factors that can contribute to suppressing addictive behavior. The purpose of this study is to obtain empirical data on the effect of self-regulation on Instagram addiction. This study uses a quantitative approach with a simple linear regression analysis technique conducted on 319 emerging adulthood in Bandung. The measuring instrument used is The Self-regulation Scale adapted from The Self-regulation Questionnaire (Miller & Brown, 1991) and the Social Media Instagram Addiction Scale adapted from The Social Media Disorder Scale (Van den Eijnden, Lemmens & Valkenburg, 2016). The results of this study indicate the value of R square = 0.144, p = 0.000, meaning that self-regulation has a significant influence on Instagram addiction by 14.4% while the remaining 85.6% is influenced by other factors.
