Abstract

Abstract. The development of smartphone's sophisticated technology provides convenience in daily life. The inability to self-regulate while using smartphones has a negative impact, one of which is nomophobia. Nomophobia is a feeling of discomfort, fear, and anxiety when away from smartphones. One of the factors that influence nomophobia is low self-esteem. During adolescents's development, they experience a period of searching for identity and seeking new relationships with peers. Adolescents who have low self-esteem are likely to use smartphones. The excessive use while using smartphone will lead to nomophobia. The purpose of this study to obtain empirical data regarding the close relationship between self-esteem and nomophobia in adolescents in Bandung. Data were collected on 184 adolescents in Bandung, using the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) compiled by Yildirim (2014) and the self-esteem measuring instrument adapted from Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The method used in this research is correlational. The data analysis technique used Spearman's rank. The results show that there is a low but significant negative relationship between self-esteem and nomophobia on adolescents in Bandung with a value of r = -0.129, p = 0.041 < 0.05, meaning that the lower the self-esteem score, the higher the nomophobia score, and vice versa.
