Abstract

Abstract. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by a high blood glucose levels because the body cannot produce enough insulin, lack of insulin production or the insulin doesn’t work effectively. Plants from family Musaceae have potential as antidiabetic because it contains flavonoid secondary metabolite compounds which can increase insulin sensitivity in the body. The purpose of this study was to determine the antidiabetic activity of plant extracts from the family Musaceae in lowering blood glucose levels, the effective dose of plant extracts as antidiabetic, and to determine secondary metabolite compunds that contain in the extract by literature studies. In this research, the results showed that plant extracts from the family Musaceae had an antidiabetic activity with an effective dose of 6 mg/KgBW to 6300 mg/KgBW. The antidiabetic activity of the extract is known because it contains secondary metabolite compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and lupenone. There are 8 species of plants from the family Musaceae that used in this study, namely Musa acuminata, Musa paradisiaca, Musa balbisiana, Musa (AAA Group), Musa (ABB Group), Musa textilis NÑe, Musa troglodytarum L., Musa nana Lour., and Musa sapientum.
