Abstract

Abstract. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as BPH, is a disease caused by the proliferation of smooth muscle and epithelial cells in the prostate's transition zone. BPH is closely related to lower urinary tract symptoms. Management of BPH can be done by performing transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) surgery. Several studies have shown TURP to be more effective than other surgeries. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of transurethral resection of the prostate in treating patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. This study is a scoping review, samples from international journals relating to the effectiveness of transurethral resection of the prostate in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia. The database used in this study is Pubmed, Springerlink, Sciencedirect, with 11,025 articles. The screening results in articles that matched the inclusion criteria were 367. Articles that entered the exclusion criteria were 356. The PICOS criteria in this study were Population (patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia), Intervention (performed transurethral resection of the prostate), Comparison (another therapy was performed), Outcome (therapy effectiveness and patient recovery), and Study (Randomized Controlled Trial, Clinical Trial). The results of the analysis of 6 reviewed articles showed that transurethral resection of the prostate was adequate compared to other therapies for the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia. To measure symptom relief, the lower urinary tract symptoms used the International Prostate Symptom Score measurement. This study concludes that the prostate's transurethral resection is effective in treating patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia with the Lower Urinary Tract Symptom.
