Abstract

Abstract. Coconut water is a popular and easily available isotonic beverage. Coconut water has a high potassium and sodium concentration that affects the volume of plasma to keep body fluid homeostatic. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of coconut water time at 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 1 hour administration before running to the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). This research was conducted using quasi experimental method. The subjects of this study were 43 second year male students of Faculty of Medicine UNISBA. The subjects were divided into four groups: the coconut water group was given 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour and was given mineral water 30 minutes before exercise, the amount of coconut water given was 240 ml. The subjects were then requested to run twice to get the VO2max value. The results showed a change in VO2max value at 10 minutes of administration with -3.08 (3.42), at 30 minutes of with -2.09 (2.25), at 1 hour with -2.09 (2.14) and at 30 minute of mineral water administration with -2,17 (2,39) with p value = 0,67 using The One Way Anova Test. Spearman correlation test was done to see the effect of coconut water time to the highest increase of VO2max value, and p value = 0,532 as high as there is no significant difference between VO2max between groups and there is no significant effect between coconut water administration time to VO2max . This is due to factors such as exercise habits research subjects that can affect internal factors VO2max as well as external factors such as environmental temperature that affect the degree of dehydration vary among individuals.
