The Cultural Transformation Process of the Center English Bandung Members

Abstract


Western culture influence Indonesian culture embraced by the Indonesian people. Western culture does not give bad influence. Each individual is supposed to understand what should be absorbed from outside cultural influences. Therefore, if someone can filter any incoming culture, cultural identity shift will not be happened. The purpose of this study is to examine the Cultural Transformation Process of the Center English Bandung Members by using Dell Hymes ethnographic analysis method covering the situation of communications, event communications, and acts of communication. Field observation was also performed in the form of direct interviews with two key informants, and indirectly via e-mail. Based on the research results, The Center English Bandung was founded on May 31, 2002 in Bandung. The establishment of The Center English Bandung is for anyone who is aware that English is a language that must be mastered by everyone. With the help of native speakers, it facilitates English language learning for its members. It is undeniable that the existence of native brought the influx of Western culture that is absorbed by the members of The Center English Bandung. Thus, in the English language learning, the members of The Center English language Bandung gain the process of transformation. Of the three processes of transformation of the culture, language makes the strongest cultural transformation among members of The Center English Bandung.
