Abstract

Abstract. The rising heat of conflict during protest action caused by the new draft bill for corruption law in Indonesia has triggered new approach in journalism practice. Standing different with other photo journalists at that time, who typically portrayed the event as a tragedy, clash of violence, and crises, here comes Dudi Sugandhi, a senior photographer from Bandung who opted to view the situation from distinct angle. Applying what mentioned as ‘peace journalism’, Sugandhi’s photos depicted more humane and harmony during the intense situation, which in turn implies a more peaceful perspective. Rather than shoot the clash or frictions among parties involved, Sugandhi portrayed harmony and interactions between parties involved, which in turn, emphasize the importance of seeing the demonstration as mere human occurrence to ease the conflict. This research aimed to explain how such perspective is being used by the photographer. The objectives of the research is revealing the motive and experience of Dudi Sugandhi as the single photographer who employs such approach in covering the occurrence. The method in this research is a qualitative method. The theoretical framework being constructed is based on the phenomenology of Alfred Schutz. The results of his research are as follows: (1) Regarding the motives of photojournalists in interpreting peaceful journalism to cover student protests in Bandung, three motives are identified, namely interest, social and economic motives; (2) For the photojournalist himself, the application of peaceful journalism in covering the event marked a new transition of a medium as vehicle for change and a bridge of information for the public; (3) The experience gained by photojournalists is consisted of positive and negative experiences which both stemmed from different treatment and responds received from other colleagues and public in general.
