Hubungan Social Comparison dan Self-Esteem pada Mahasiswa Pengguna Instagram

Abstract


Abstract. The use of Instagram allows users to make social comparison. Instagram presents the most positive aspects of its users’ lives, so that observers can feel inferior when they feel that they’re not comparable to others. The study aimed to research correlation between social comparison and self-esteem among student Instagram user. The present study used a correlational research design with 400 students who used Instagram. Measurement of social comparison is using instrument named INCOM (Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Scale) Gibbons and Buunk (1999). Self-esteem is measured by Rosenberg self-esteem scale. The correlation between social comparison orientation and self-esteem was calculated by Spearman correlation technique. The result shows -0.241 and p-value (Sig.) = 0.000 < α = 0.01, means that there’s low correlation between social comparison and self-esteem, also negative correlation between these variables mean the higher of social comparison then the lower of self-esteem.

Abstrak Penggunaan Instagram pada mahasiswa memungkinkan penggunanya untuk melakukan social comparison. Instagram menampilkan aspek paling positif dari kehidupan penggunanya yang membuat pengamat dapat merasa rendah diri ketika merasa tidak sebanding dengan orang lain. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk meneliti hubungan antara social comparison dan self-esteem pada mahasiswa pengguna Instagram. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah korelasional dengan responden sebanyak 400 orang mahasiswa pengguna Instagram. Alat ukur yang digunakan adalah Scale For Social Comparison Orientation (INCOM, Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Scale) oleh Gibbons & Buunk tahun 1999 untuk mengukur social comparison dan Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale untuk mengukur self-esteem. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik analisis korelasi Rank Spearman. Nilai korelasi yang dihasilkan sebesar -0,241 dan p-value (Sig.) = 0,000 < α = 0,01. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan hubungan yang rendah antara social comparison dan self-esteem pada mahasiswa pengguna Instagram. Nilai negatif pada korelasi menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi social comparison maka semakin rendah self-esteem.
