Abstract


Abstract. School engagement is the involvement of students in the learning process in academic activities and non-academic activities showing in students’ behavior, emotions, and cognitive   in the school and classroom setting. Engaged Students will show behavior that following norms at school, obeying  rules,  not behaving in negative way like fighting, smoking or anything that could  get them into trouble. Otherwise,  students that  are not engaged  will tend to  behave problematicly and associating themselves with delinquent environment and friends (Wang & Fredericks, 2014). Purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between School Engagement with Juvenile Delinquency in the 11th grade X boarding school students. The sample were 58 students, using random sampling techniques. The data collected by using School Engagement questionnaire of Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2004) and the Juvenile Delinquency questionnaire based on theory of Kartono (2011). The data analysed with Pearson Product Moment Pearson. The results showed a significant relationship between School Engagement with Juvenile Delinquency, with a negative relationship direction (r = -0.578, p = 0.000 <0.05). It means, the lower the school engagement, the higher the juvenile delinquency.

Abstrak. School engagement merupakan keterlibatan siswa dalam proses pembelajaran pada kegiatan akademik dan kegiatan non-akademik yang terlihat melalui tingkah laku, emosi, dan kognitif yang ditampilkan siswa di lingkungan sekolah dan kelas. Siswa yang engaged akan memperlihatkan perilaku yang sesuai dengan norma di sekolah, tidak melanggar aturan, tidak berperilaku negatif seperti berkelahi, merokok dan sebagainya yang dapat menyebabkan mereka terkena masalah. Begitu pula apabila siswa tidak terlibat dalam sekolah akan melampiaskan dengan bertingkah laku problematik dan mengasosiasikan diri dengan lingkungan dan teman-teman yang delikuen (Wang & Fredericks, 2014).Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara school engagement dengan juvenile delinquency pada santri SMA X boarding school kelas XI. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 58 orang. Pengambilan sampel pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik random sampling. Alat ukur yang digunakan ialah 2 buah angket yaitu angket school engagement menggunakan 3 aspek dari Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2004) dan angket juvenile delinquency berdasarkan aspek dari Kartono (2011). Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan skala likert untuk variabel school engagement dan juvenile delinquency. Metode analisis data menggunakan teknik korelasi product moment dari Pearson. Hasil uji korelasi Pearson menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara school engagement dengan juvenile delinquency, dengan arah hubungan yang negatif (r = -0,578, p = 0,000 < 0,05). Hal ini berarti, semakin rendah school engagement maka semakin tinggi juvenile delinquency; dan demikian pula sebaliknya, semakin tinggi school engagement maka semakin rendah juvenile delinquency. Peneliti menyarankan agar pihak sekolah khususnya boarding school lebih memerhatikan school engagement pada remaja.
