Abstract

Abstract. Someone newly diagnosed with HIV / AIDS, often will feel depressed, afraid, despair also feels alienated because they feel shunned by others. Under these conditions, often support from the environment and family is not obtained. Therefore, the role of companion for PLWHA becomes strategic in an effort to help PLWHA to return to productive life. The HIV community that provides social and support services that have a role as a companion for PLWHA in Bandung is Female Plus Bandung. At present, there are 13 peer companions in Female Plus Bandung consisting of 9 PLWHA and 4 OHIDHA. In carrying out their roles, of course they faced various challenges. In a study conducted by Akintola (2008), caregivers at one hospital in South Africa experienced stress due to facing stigma from the community and also the results of Valljee and van Dyk's study (2014) showed that caregivers experienced stress because they faced very many patients. But these two things did not happen to the peer companion of PLWHA in Female Plus Bandung. With the evaluation of life experiences they can view their lives positively, use their potential, especially in dealing with their problems , so that they function positively in the environment and achieve psychological well-being.
