Studi Deskriptif Mengenai Student Engagement dan Faktor Pendukungnya pada Murid di Kursus Bahasa Inggris Aec Soreang Bandung

Abstract


Abstract. Course is a non-formal school that teaches students to train the skill they need. Course is an extra lesson program that managed by private institute, and has similar curriculum as formal school. AEC is one of english course that has an original curriculum, and some students feel the curriculum is hard till many of them decided to quit. But some of the students willing for remedial many times. They seem have an engagement with AEC, eventhough the lessons are hard for them. But they feel happy to study in AEC and it feels like their second home. They showed engagement, which is an expression of motivation that shown by their behavior, emotion, and cognitive in academic activity. The purpose of study is describing student engagement of AEC English course’s students. The data were taken by questionnaire based on student engagement theory by Connell. Samples are 17 students willing to repeat the lesson many times. The results show us that 96% have high student engagement, then 96% are high in behavior aspect, 100% are high in emotion aspect, and 59% are high in cognitive aspect. In the student engagement supporting factors, there are 14 students high in need for autonomy, 11 students are high in need for relatedness, and 10 students are high in need for competence.

Abstrak. Kursus adalah tempat pendidikan anak selain sekolah formal, yang akan mengajarkan anak dalam mendalami skill yang dibutuhkannya. Kursus bersifat tambahan pelajaran bagi anak serta dikelola oleh swasta dan mempunyai kurikulum yang menyerupai kurikulum sekolah. AEC adalah salah satu tempat kursus bahasa inggris yang memiliki kurikulum sendiri, dan metode yang dirasa berat oleh murid hingga banyak diantaranya yang mengundurkan diri. Tetapi sebagian murid mau untuk mengulang berulang kali. Mereka terlihat memiliki keterikatan dengan AEC itu sendiri. Walau mereka merasa metode pembelajaran terbilang berat, tetapi mereka merasa senang belajar di AEC dan mengatakan juga AEC sebagai rumah keduanya. Mereka menunjukan engagement, yaitu tampilan dari motivasi yang dilihat melalui tindakan perilaku, emosi, dan kognitif yang ditampilkan oleh siswa dalam kegiatan akademik. Tujuan dari penelitian adalah menggambarkan student engagement pada murid tempat kursus bahasa Inggris. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan alat ukur berupa kuisioner dari teori Connell. Sampel berjumlah 17 murid yang mau mengulang materi berulang kali. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah terdapat 96%  yang memiliki tingkat student engagment yang tinggi. Lalu secara per aspek, didapat 96%  pada kategori tinggi di aspek perilaku, 100% tinggi pada aspek emosi, dan 59% tinggi pada aspek kognitif. Serta pada faktor pendukung yang paling menonjol berada pada faktor need for autonomy dengan 14 orang, dan 11 pada need for relatedness dan 10 orang pada need for competence.
