Self Presentation of TNI as Military and Entrepreneur

Abstract


The main subject of this research is how Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) represents themselves as a member of the armed forces and entrepreneur with The Concept of Symbolic Interaction approach from Blumer which is (1) Self Concept, (2) Concept of Deed, (3) Concept of Object, and (4) Concept of Social Interaction and attributed with the theory of Dramaturgy. According to the phenomenon, the formulation for the proposition in this research are; (1) How TNI Indonesian Air Porce decide the Concept of Self as both active military and entrepreneur? (2) How the TNI Indonesian Air Porce decide their Concept of Deed as both active military member and entrepreneur? (3) What kind of symbol utilized to represent themselves to entrepreneur associates? (4) How their social environment give interpretation for TNI Indonesian Air Porce as both military and entrepreneur?. This research utilized qualitative approach complemented with descriptive method with symbolic interaction approach method. The technique utilized to acquire data required for this research are interviews, observations, documentation and literature reviews. The results discovered from this research are: (1) The three key informant;s  Self Concept of the TNI as both military and entrepreneur influenced by physical factor, psychological factor, and environmental factor. (2) The three key informant’s Concept of Deed of TNI as both military and entrepreneur in  the military environment is that they established good images with the purpose to make themselves as model for their subordinates. The requisite factor in becoming a member of TNI Indonesian Air Porce resulted the front stage is not in accordance with their back stage as an entrepreneur. The three key informants perceived more relaxing behavior in the entrepreneur environment. (3) TNI determines the meaning of symbols to entrepreneur associates is inseparable from verbal and non-verbal messages in form of kinesik and removing TNI attributes when in the entrepreneur environment. (4) The social interaction concept in giving interpretation to TNI as both military and entrepreneur by practicing forms of social interaction with the examples of cooperation, accommodation, and assimilation.
