Abstract

Abstract. Malassezia is a normal flora of the skin, can cause some skin problems like dandruff, tinea versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, etc. Antifungal commonly used to treat skin infections because Malassezia is an azole group, but can cause resistance in some people. The study of this literature study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the antifungal activity of lemongrass essential oils against various species of Malassezia. Starting with a review of several studies that tested the antifungal activity that exists in citronella essential oils against various types of Malassezia. The result is lemongrass essential oils proven to inhibit the growth of Malassezia. Then review the mechanism of action of lemongrass essential oils against Malassezia with the sorbitol & ergosterol bioassay test. The result is its antifungal mechanism by disrupting the cell membrane Malassezia, evidenced by the MIC value of essential oils which initially only 0.31-1.25 μL/mL becomes increased with the addition of ergosterol. And its antifungal activity due to citral compounds as evidenced by the TLC profile of citronella essential oils and standard citral showed patches that were parallel with RF values of 0.38. TLC plates turn purple, which indicates the presence of terpenes, citral compounds including terpenes.
