The Effectiveness of Elephant Ginger Rhizome (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) Water Extract to Decrease Total Blood Cholesterol Level on Mice Induced Propylthiouracil

Abstract


Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke.  Active compounds contained in ginger are gingerol, shogaol and niacin (B3) can potentially reduce total blood cholesterol levels. The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness  rhizome of elephant ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) water extract to decrease total cholesterol blood  levels in mice feed high-fat and induced propylthiouracil. The methode of this study was experimental with 30 male mice DDY strain fed high fat and induced propylthouracil 0.01% for 7 days in group II-VI. Elephant ginger rhizome warter extract was given at doses 28; 56; and 112 mg/kg weight with positive control of simvastatin 0,026 mg/kg weight. The result were analyzed by One Way ANOVA Test and  followed by Post-Hoc test. The Result: decrease of average total cholesterol levels of group I-VI blood respectively: 1.40; 22.00; 65,60; 62,20; 62,20 and 58,60 mg/dL (p = 0,035). The treat elephant ginger rhizome water extract doses 28 mg/kg weight and 56mg/kg weight have similarity of simvastain effectivity doses 0,026 mg/kg weight, but in doses 112 mg/kg weight have least  than effectivity so  might be its doses optimum not clearly. Conclusion: elephant ginger rhizome water extract can decrease total cholesterol of mice blood induced propylthiouracil
