The Relationship of Pain Intensity with Sleep Quality of Diabetic Neuropathy Patients at Puskesmas Salam Bandung

Abstract


Indonesia is among the top 10 countries with the highest number of Diabetic Mellitus (DM) disease in the world. According to the Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia, most of DM complication is diabetic neuropathy by 54%. Diabetic neuropathy sufferers generally feel the symptoms of neuropathic pain such as  sense of tingling, burning, piercing, and tearing. Symptoms of neuropathic pain affect the quality of sleep of diabetic neuropathy patients. The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship of pain intensity with sleep quality of diabetic neuropathy patient at Puskesmas Salam Bandung over the period of March - May 2017. This research is an observational analytic research with cross sectional approach. The data were obtained from the validated PSQI questionnaire and the pain intensity assessment using numeric rating scale (NRS) was done to 44 respondents with consecutive sampling method. The results showed that the majority of diabetic neuropathy respondents had moderate pain intensity (59.1%) and poor sleep quality (75.5%). There is a statistically significant relationship between pain intensity and sleep quality, with the value of p ≤ 0.001 (p ≤ 0.05). In this research, it was concluded, diabetic neuropathy patients had moderate pain intensity and poor sleep quality, and there is a significant relationship between the intensity of pain and sleep quality.
