Abstract

Abstract. Scoliosis is a three dimensional deformity of the spine and trunk with lateral curvature of the spine greater than 10 degrees, which may deteriorate quickly during periods of rapid growth. Current management requires expensive funds and facilities and it is difficult to complete if the scoliosis is not detected, handled and given appropriate treatment properly. Scoliosis screening programme has not become a policy in Indonesia so it is one of the factors that cause the prevalence rate of scoliosis is still unknown and the increasingly late diagnosis for scoliosis cases. The purpose of this study id to determine the potential of scoliosis in elementary school students in Tamansari Village Bandung using the Adam’s Forward Bending Test screening method. The method used in this study was an observational descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The sample selection technique used in this study was total sampling and obtained a total of 89 research subjects in Pertiwi elementary school girls at Tamansari village, Bandung City, West Java. The results of the study showed that respondents who were in the 9 to 12 years age range, had a curvature indication of 85.4%. Rib hump found of 69.7%, and 33.7% showed results for intermediate scoliosis and 6.7% showed results for high scoliosis potention using scoliometer. The high prevalence of potential scoliosis in the age range is associated with the presence of pubertal growth spurt (9-12 years). In that period the curves progression of scoliosis can reach up to 5-10° that shows the screening at that age range is very instrumental in preventing late diagnosis and worsening progression of scoliosis curvature. We conclude that there is potential for the occurrence of scoliosis in elementary school students occurs at elementary school student in Tamansari Village Bandung.
